My mom bought me a breast cancer awareness purse for my fifteenth birthday. I thought it was the ugliest thing I’d ever seen. It was black with white lettered sayings plastered all over it. Things like â€Å"cancer isn’t about living and dying, it’s about living until I die† and â€Å"fight like a girl.† The sayings didn’t mean anything to me, and neither did the purse. The only thing cute about it was the pink ribbon in the corner, but that wasn’t enough for me to flaunt it around everywhere. Cancer to me was a death sentence. If the doctor told you that you had cancer, you were going to die, it was that simple. Cancer was something that was never going to happen to me or to anyone I loved. It just didn’t happen that way. I guess you could say we, myself and my loved ones, were invincible. It didn’t take long though, for cancer to become a trip to the emergency room after my mom had severe back pain. Cancer was a pain, o ne that didn’t ever go away. Cancer was a heartless doctor explaining my mom’s expiration date. Two weeks, the doc said my mom would be lucky if she lived that long. Cancer had not only been in her breast, but in her bones, lung, liver, and skin as well. Cancer was a hospital room full of family. It was my mom with a huge smile plastered on her face despite hearing the horrid news. Over the years the abuse of psychoactive drugs has become a persistent issue effecting individuals worldwide. Psychoactive Drugs are substances that change a person’s mood, perception, mental functioning and behavior (Understanding Psychology pg 142). These drugs are often ingested to alter an individuals feelings or to help them cope with their problems. However the â€Å"high† that they receive does not remain long, resulting in the continuous use of the drug to remain feeling that â€Å"high†. Nevertheless the ongoing abuse of these drugs may lead to these individuals developing a tolerance for the drug. This results to the individual becoming dependant upon the drug. This dependence is known as addiction. Nicotine, â€Å"Crack† Cocaine and Alcohol, are the most dangerous and addictive psychoactive drugs. Other commonly abused drugs are Amphetamines, Prescription Medication, Heroin, Ecstasy, and Marijuana. The nonmedical use of prescription-type drugs (NMUPD), which is the same as using drugs without a prescription, and it is very common among young adults. For instance, drugs such as sedatives, opioids, and stimulants are commonly misused by adolescents simply for the experience or the feeling. The nonmedical use of prescription drugs ranks as one of the most common drug problems in the United States. However, the rate of misuse has slightly declined in recent years. The victims of misuse are mostly young teenagers who dont have much information about the drugs and their side effects. These teenagers most often access the drugs through their friends and family. Different circumstances such as peer pressure might lead to drug abuse and dependence. Could mental illnesses be a strong contributing factors associated with causing increased cases of illegal drug misuse and substance abuse? Adolescents suffering from mental illness, regardless of its severity, are at a higher risk of NMUPD. A teenagers mental status and some environmental factors may significantly affect a teenager to abuse drugs. Mental illness can have a significant effect on drug misuse and dependence. Because of the stress and pressures that students experience at school and at home, many students are at a higher risk of experiencing mental discomforts such as anxiety and depression which can often result in undiagnosed and hence, untreated drug abuse. Additionally, many psychotherapeutic drugs as well as alcohol are being misused because of the feeling of excitement they cause. This form of drug abuse is highly associated with alcohol abuse. The early age of the onset of NMUPD is another reason for prescription drug misuse and dependence. On the other hand, many adolescents misuse prescription drugs for treatment purposes and do not realize they are abusing the drugs, and they will eventually become dependent on them. According to Allison N. Monge, a separate line of research indicates that in the presence of experienced mental- disorder symptoms†some individuals use these substances for purposes of self- treatment (40). Because young people do not have enough information, they cannot make informed choices. Many teenagers would think overusing drugs that were once rescribed to them does not cause any issues, but because they are not fully aware of the side effects and are under the impression that since the drugs were once prescribed to them they can continue using it, they decide to abuse the them which often leads to dependence. Some young adults misuse these medications Just to experience the mental feeling the drugs cause while some take them to relieve pain, stay awake or fall asleep. Nonetheless, misusing them could result in drug abuse and drug dependence regardless of the intent. Drug abuse and dependence is highly correlated with alcohol abuse. According to Jenna L. McCauley, high rates of other substance use/abuse (including binge drinking, illicit drug use, and alcohol abuse) on the evidence, most of the drug abuse cases show a similarly high dependent on alcohol use. The co-occurring of alcohol abuse and non-medical use of prescription drugs is common. Many alcohol abusers have shown anxiety associated a with mood disorder. Psychiatric drugs are often prescribed for patients with mood disorders. Once a young adult with an established mood disorder experiences the psychiatric drugs the risk of dependence and abuse can highly increase. The use of such substances can lead to use of marijuana and other drugs which can all result in further drug abuse and dependence. The use of prescription drugs to feel intoxicated is common among adolescents. However, family care can be an important factor to prevent the alcohol and drug abuse. A Critique of Pablo Neruda?s ?Keeping Still? :: essays research papers

Keeping Still by Pablo Neruda is a thought provoking work of poetry. The poem was probably applicable to humanity of the time when it was authored, but it eerily fits so well into this moment of time and space. The notion of slowing the pace of life down for just a moment to realize that every living thing could use a moment of peace and reflection is so applicable to our lives in the Silicon Valley. With our hectic ways of trying to survive financially, complete our education, live and raise a family, we quickly forget about life itself at a basic level. We take practically everything for granted because we get so caught up in†¦well, life. An idea of world peace to be realized by everybody at the same time is portrayed vividly as well. No chaos, unrest, war, political persecution or death. An image of complete bliss, if momentarily, flashes to show people coming together without prejudice and a common goal to help each other instead of chasing the almighty dollar. Neruda uses some different poetic elements to portray his vision, including repetition. An example of repetition can be found linking the beginning to the end. â€Å"Now we will count to twelve†, is the first line of the poem and the second to last line of the poem. It reiterates the countdown to momentary silence. It gives the reader something to think about before the poem gets underway and it is almost oddly placed. But at the end when it is said again it makes you imagine everything that he has proposed seem so easily obtainable by simply counting to twelve. Another poetic element that he uses is metaphors. An example of this is when he says, â€Å"Victories with no survivors.† It is a contrasting sentence that was probably referring to either of the World Wars. I really enjoyed reading this poem. It pertains a lot to my life and the immediate population of the Bay Area. Heck, anyone who works a lot of hours and has daily stress can relate to this poem. Neruda is correct about people not being able to live a moment without all of the stress. A momentary lapse in the false sense of realty people create around themselves could really be devastating to them. Realizing that the new Mercedes doesn’t achieve happiness or that a high paying job with ample promotions isn’t bringing self-fulfillment would be devastating to many people.

Lauren Riley Professor Piana February 26, 2012 Rear Window Last class we viewed the film called Rear Window. The main plot behind this film is the main character, Jefferies, has a broken leg therefore he has to spend 6 weeks in a wheelchair in his apartment. The one form of entertainment he has is to window watch all his neighbors. Jefferies has a girlfriend named Lisa but tells his nurse that he does not want to marry her. After a few weeks Jefferies catches onto his neighbors business. He seems to think one of his neighbors named Thorwall murdered his wife.He gets this perception from weapons being brought into the apartment and a random disappearance of his wife, while some of her belongings stay at the apartment. From here he spends the rest of his time trying to solve this â€Å"murder† mystery. He gets help from his girlfriend, a friend and his nurse. Towards the end of the movie the action increases dramatically. Lisa sneaks into Thorwall’s apartment to look for evidence of the murder. While she is in their Thorwall comes back and finds her in his apartment and begins to beat her. The police are then called and Lisa is brought to jail for trespassing.Next Thorwall sneaks into Jefferies apartment and begins to beat him up even though Jefferies is helpless because of his leg. He then pushes him out the window and survives but then breaks his other leg and has to go 6 more weeks’ window watching in his apartment. Important scenes play a big role in films. The first important scene is when Jefferies first discovers Thorwall’s wife is gone. This is when he comes up with the idea of the murder. This is the scene that begins the conflict in the film. Another important scene is when Lisa sneaks into Thorwall’s apartment and gets caught. This scene is the climax of the film.A final important scene is when Lisa is let out of jail and the policeman catch Jefferies out of the window and he breaks his other leg, this shows irony and a predicted future for him. Throughout films we see repeated elements. First we see girls wearing dresses. Back then girls were always dressed nicely. This is repeated throughout the whole film. A big element repeated is when Thorwall leaves his apartment 3 different times during one night when it was rainy out. He has his suitcase with him every time as well. This portrayed the first image of suspicion. Another repeated prop was binoculars.This was important because it helped them figure out the murder case and was an essential tool in this film. This film portrayed neighborly conflict. As we have seen in prior films, everyone must love they neighbor. I believe this was broken in this film. First we see someone’s dog was killed and she immediately starts blaming and asking which neighbor killed her dog. Another time where we don’t see loving neighbors is when Thorwall uses violence against Lisa and Jefferies. Respect for neighbors was not followed in this film. Withi n this film we see a lot of marital and serious relationships.We are portrayed with the image that the girl cooks dinner for the man every night and sets up a nice table and helps him relax after a long days of work. Unfortunately Jefferies sees a lot of this, but continues to believe in not marrying Lisa. Towards the end of the movie though his perspective changes. It shows Lisa and Jefferies happily relaxing in his apartment together. Within this film Hitchcock used Montage editing. This was a new concept back then and Hitchcock did a fantastic job using it. We saw frames from lots of different angels and frames put in order to create meaning.

Because the traditional method is a more broad discussion and there aren’t specific roles for students to carry out students are not pressured to be prepared.I can use myself as an example, last year there would be times I wouldn't read the sections assigned and because of this I found myself not participating and engaging in class discussions. The evaluation creates pressure, causing students to be prepared and contribute during scheduled conferences.
